Icegate Registration & Customs Duty Guide for Indian Importers (2026)

ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Gateway) is the official portal of Indian Customs for electronic filing of Bill of Entry, Shipping Bills, and duty payments. Here is how first-time importers navigate ICEGATE registration, AD Code linking, and customs calculations.

1. What is ICEGATE and Why is it Mandatory?

ICEGATE connects traders, Custom House Agents (CHA), shipping lines, and banks directly with Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). Without ICEGATE registration, importers cannot track shipment arrivals, file e-Bill of Entry, or pay import duties online.

2. Step-by-Step ICEGATE Registration

  • Visit `icegate.gov.in` and select User Registration.
  • Provide IEC (Import Export Code), PAN, and active Mobile Number linked with DGFT.
  • Upload Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
  • Complete Aadhaar-based OTP verification.

3. Registering Authorized Dealer (AD) Code

An AD Code (Authorized Dealer Code) is a 14-digit code issued by your bank. To receive export remittances or clear import shipments at specific ports (e.g., JNPT, Mundra, Chennai Port), you must register your AD code on ICEGATE for each port location.

Customs Duty Formula

Total Customs Duty Payable = Basic Customs Duty (BCD) + Social Welfare Surcharge (10% of BCD) + IGST (calculated on CIF Value + BCD + Surcharge). Always verify the correct HSN code to avoid misclassification fines!

4. E-Payment of Duties & Track & Trace

Importers must pay customs duty through the ICEGATE e-Payment gateway within 24 hours of Bill of Entry assessment to prevent demurrage and warehouse storage charges at air and sea ports.
