What is a GST Invoice?

A GST invoice (or Tax Invoice) is a legal document issued by a registered taxpayer when supplying goods or services. Under the Goods and Services Tax Act 2017, every GST-registered business must issue a proper tax invoice for every taxable supply. The invoice is the primary document for claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC) and forms the basis of GST return filings.

There are different types of GST invoices depending on the transaction: Tax Invoice (most common, for B2B and B2C sales), Bill of Supply (for exempt goods or unregistered composition dealers), Export Invoice (for exports of goods or services), and Revised Invoice (to correct errors in the original invoice).

Our free GST invoice generator creates fully compliant invoices for all business types — goods sellers, service providers, exporters, restaurants, contractors, and more. No signup, no watermark, no charges. Generate and download unlimited invoices in seconds.

GST Invoice FAQs

Everything you need to know about GST invoices in India

A GST Tax Invoice must include: supplier's name, address & GSTIN; invoice number & date; recipient's name, address & GSTIN (if registered); HSN/SAC codes; description & quantity of goods/services; taxable value; applicable tax rates and amounts (CGST+SGST or IGST); and the total amount payable.
Use CGST + SGST for intra-state supplies (supplier and buyer in the same state). For example, selling from Mumbai to Pune. Use IGST for inter-state supplies (supplier and buyer in different states). For example, selling from Mumbai to Delhi. The total GST rate is the same — only the split differs.
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods for GST purposes. SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services. Businesses with annual turnover above ₹5 crore must use 6-digit HSN codes; ₹1.5–5 crore must use 4-digit codes; below ₹1.5 crore are exempt from HSN on the invoice.
Yes. Unregistered businesses (annual turnover below ₹20 lakhs for services, ₹40 lakhs for goods) do not need a GSTIN and should issue a 'Bill of Supply' instead of a Tax Invoice. They cannot charge GST or claim input tax credit.
E-invoicing is a system where B2B invoices are reported to the GST portal before issuance. It is mandatory for businesses with annual turnover above ₹5 crore from August 2023. Our generator creates compliant invoice formats, but for e-invoicing you need to submit to the IRP (Invoice Registration Portal) to get an IRN and QR code.
IT services (software, consulting, cloud, app development, web design) attract 18% GST. SAC code 998314 applies to IT design and development services. If providing services to an overseas client (export of services), the invoice can be zero-rated IGST with a letter of undertaking (LUT).
Restaurants in India are taxed at 5% GST (no input tax credit) for dine-in at regular restaurants. AC restaurants in star hotels attract 18% GST. Zomato/Swiggy orders attract 5% GST collected by the aggregator. Use our restaurant template above for auto-calculation.
GST law requires businesses to maintain invoice records for a minimum of 72 months (6 years) from the due date of filing the annual return for that financial year. Digital copies are acceptable as per GST rules.
